What’s Happening at KCL!

Residents of Katzman Center for Living in Chelsea, Massachusetts participate in Spring activities.Spring is certainly in the air at Katzman Family Center for Living. The residents have been busy making beautiful  arrangements and spring-themed collages.

The past year has been incredibly challenging for our staff, our residents, and our residents’ families. Going forward, there’s a lot to be excited about here at KCL. The weather is getting better, the sun is setting later, and there is an overwhelming feeling of optimism permeating the air. Over the past month, we have been working hard to regain a level of normalcy. We have begun to implement socially distanced, communal dining on all three of our units. Our residents are so excited to be able to sit six feet apart together to enjoy their meals. This was particularly evident during our special Passover Seders. Additionally, we have been able to offer small, socially distanced group activities. As always, Bingo and Jimmy’s concerts (now held via Zoom) are among our most popular events.

We have a new team member on our Dementia Special Care Unit. Susan LeClaire joins us this month as our new Therapeutic Activities Director for our DSCU. Susan, a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, has been working in the therapy department at our Peabody campus for many years. Susan will be interacting closely with the interdisciplinary team to expand our activities programming for our residents living with dementia. We are very excited to welcome Susan to our team!

Lastly, we are pleased to welcome families back to our residents’ rooms once again. The MA Department of Public Health is now allowing fully vaccinated visitors to meet with their fully vaccinated residents in their rooms without having to adhere to social distancing. After more than a year without in-room visits, we have seen many families reunite. It has been a happy and emotional time. As Carol, one of our family members, noted, “I’m thrilled beyond words that I will have unity to FINALLY hug my mom!!”
