Cohen Florence Levine Resident Ruthann Marzilli Enjoys Every Day to the Fullest

At 78, Ruthann Marzilli has a youthful spirit, a warm smile, and a philosophy of life that is as simple as it is inspiring: enjoy yourself, laugh often, and connect with the people around you.

Before moving to Cohen Florence Levine Estates (CFLE), Ruthann explored several assisted living communities. She initially chose CFLE as a respite resident, and after just a few weeks, the decision to make it her permanent home came easily.

Her impression? “It just feels like home!”

A Close-Knit Family

Born and raised in Everett, and Revere, Massachusetts, Ruthann grew up surrounded by a close-knit family. Today, she remains in frequent contact with her sister, Barbara Lagorio, and her brother, Fred Lagorio.

Ruthann met her husband, John Marzilli, at a party in Boston. The couple was married for 40 years and built an active family life with their son, Andrew, and Ruthann’s stepchildren, John and Christine. Over the years, they also opened their hearts and homes to numerous rescued cats and dogs.

Ruthann and John experienced tremendous heartbreak when their son, Andrew, passed away from cystic fibrosis at just 19 years old.

“I was so fortunate to be his mother,” Ruthann said.

A Career Built Around People

In addition to raising her family, Ruthann enjoyed a successful career in customer service for a variety of investment and banking companies. She quickly discovered that her natural ability to connect with people was one of her greatest strengths.

“I love talking to people,” she explains. “My job gave me a chance to really get to know my clients.”

Ruthann worked until she was 62, when she retired and enjoyed spending time with John. Together, they traveled to Florida, Spain, and other destinations, creating many wonderful memories. John passed away 10 years ago.

Finding Community at CFLE

Today, Ruthann enjoys staying active and interacting with both staff and fellow residents at CFLE.

“The staff is just wonderful,” she says. “They put up with my foolishness,” she adds with a laugh.

Ruthann is also an avid reader and can often be found with a book in hand. She enjoys reading in her apartment, in the cozy library, and in the welcoming outdoor spaces when the weather is nice.

“I read everywhere,” she says. “I really love it.”

For Ruthann’s family, finding the right assisted living community was an important decision. Her sister, Barbara, says they visited approximately four other communities before deciding that CFLE was the right fit.

“We felt more comfortable in Chelsea,” Barbara says. “The staff is always so welcoming and attentive. It makes a big difference.”

Barbara also appreciates the size and layout of CFLE.

“It’s spacious without being overwhelming and easy to get around,” she says. “I can’t say enough good things about it. In fact, “We never fail to be impressed by the care and kindness of all the staff. I don’t think my sister would be as happy anywhere else.”

Ruthann’s brother, Fred, agrees that the staff plays a major role in her happiness.

“There’s a real sense of community that we noticed the first time we walked through the doors,” he says.

Jen Fazekas, Director of Marketing for Chelsea Jewish Lifecare, says Ruthann has quickly become a beloved member of the CFLE community.

“Ruthann is an absolute joy to have as a resident,” says Jen. “She is kind, compassionate, warm and friendly. She lights up a room when she walks in.”

Enjoying Every Day

For Ruthann, life is about making the most of each day and appreciating the people who make it special. She has faced life with quiet dignity and a deep appreciation of her family and life-long friends.

“Learn to enjoy yourself, laugh a lot, and talk to people,” she advises. “Things have a way of working out.”
