Do you recall taking your first step? Or the joy you felt when you uttered your first word and received praise in return?

Of course you don’t. You were too young. But the feeling of accomplishment and connection was nonetheless very real in those moments, even if we cannot recall them in adulthood.

Now imagine those things being taken away.

That’s what amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) does. It progressively robs you of your ability to move and, often, to speak. Ultimately, it is fatal.
