What I like most in Kaplan is the staff. They are excellent and absolutely awesome. They are very helpful and sweet. They like my mother-in-law, and she likes them. If she is not at her table at dinner, they come looking for her, find her, and make sure she has dinner. They hire special kinds of people. What’s nice is that they do an assessment, and after she had been there for a month, they called me up and assessed what they need to do for her. Her room is sunny and big. It has one bedroom, a living room, a walk-in closet, and it’s beautiful. She loves it. We have dinner there, and it is fabulous. They bring in musicians. They have presentations. I always go there after lunch to visit my mother-in-law, and they always have something at two o’clock, so she is never bored. There are a lot of places where you can walk inside and outside because they have a memory care, a Jewish community center, and a childcare. You can walk down the hall and look through windows to see them. My mother-in-law is happy there, and that makes us happy. It is the best move that we have ever made.

Residents have the opportunity to be as social as they wish with plenty to do at Kaplan and the Great Room next door. My father especially enjoys meeting with students who come to visit and learn from the Kaplan community, he also enjoyed the weekly outings to local restaurants. I, too, make new acquaintances whenever I visit.
Weekly Shabbat dinners, services and other holiday celebrations bring a familiarity to the residents. Even residents who are not Jewish feel at home.
During this unprecedented time in our lives Kaplan has been diligent in keeping their residents safe. The staff have communicated with families, providing updates with all changing procedures, along with CDC and state guidelines. Families have been offered alternative visitation options to see and speak with loved ones, in addition to virtual groups, to share in coping with the fact that we are not able to see those we care for.
My dad is happy, content and safe. What more could a child want for their elderly parent.

Our parents move to your facility came at a particularly anxious and difficult time for our family and the Kaplan community as a whole. I’m sure all decisions to transition to assisted living come with unique challenges but the public health crisis increased the potential for problems exponentially. From our first conversation, You- Marisa, Andrea and your entire staff have been outstanding. You have all shown tremendous competence and compassion, ensuring the move remained as stress-free as possible. Your collective commitment to the safety, health and well-being of your residents was clear. My parents have felt welcomed right from the moment of their arrival. They have experienced a skillful balance of support and independence allowing them to feel comfortable, confident, safe and at home. We are secure in the knowledge that this balance can and will be adjusted as their needs inevitably change. Even in the current restricted environment, George and Loraine have begun to make friends and feel part of the community.
My family and I are very grateful to you and the Kaplan family. Here’s to what we hope will be the very happy and very long final chapter our parents deserve and have earned.

I got the call early in the morning. The kind of early when you know the call will not go well. My father had fallen. This lead to our journey to Kaplan Estates. In reality, we knew this day was coming, but it was too painful for any of us to process, let alone breech with Dad who was the rock of our family and now a frail old man.
Where do you start especially during a pandemic? I am in Florida and afraid to fly in the pandemic. I went on line and I was brought to the Kaplan Estate’s web site. It seemed like a great fit as my parents are religious and I felt it was a place they would be comfortable. I called Marisa and she followed up immediately and walked my brother and I through the whole process. She had a video made of the apartment and in a leap of faith built on trust of the wonderful Kaplan family, we took the apartment sight unseen. These reassuring people helped us arrange a complicated move of my mother from their condo and my father from a nursing facility. They promised they would be there to let my mom in hook up her phone, make up the bed, and feed her. They kept every promise and more as we were unable to go in due to the pandemic. My father arrived two days later and was equally helped.
The Kaplan family have done an excellent job in acclimating my parents to their final destination. They are happy there.

Hi Marisa, it’s Linda Wood. I just wanted to tell you that my mom is thrilled with her new room! I was able to wave to her out the window yesterday and today, I met my sister there and we were able to both wave to her out the window! (6ft apart of course). I want to thank you as well as all the staff that have been so kind and patient to not only my mom, but to myself and my family. I can’t say enough about how caring you all have been. I’ve been crying happy tears all day. Thank you thank you thank you.
God bless you all ❤
I’m forever indebted to you for making you mom feel safe and not afraid ❤

“I’m so glad
we’ve found each other,”
my mother tells me,
as I file her nails.
And then the doors lock,
the visit ends.
How to explain pandemic
and quarantine to someone
who has no sense of time
or place.
“When are you coming to visit?”
she asks daily.
“As soon as we can, “ we reply.
As visits become virtual,
someone else will take the place
of being there,
Take the place
of family.
And when the questions stop,
trapped in a viral haze,
someone else will care and love,
keep her safe,
feed and encourage,
be her family.
And when she awakes
from that dark place.
she knows she is safe,
she doesn’t ask for us
to come and get her.
she is home at last.
Dear Cheryl,
We are so grateful for all you have given and done, for being there for Star, for all the care, concern, love and tenderness that kept her safe and brought her through these challenging times. We are so grateful for your keeping the connections and for being Star’s family when we haven’t been able to be there.
With warmth, love and well wishes,
Laurie, Julie, Bobby and families
