Each home features a central communal space near the kitchen and a dining table for 10. There’s also an electrical hearth, where 10 residents live together in private rooms under the care of “shahbazim,” as nursing staffers are known. (Shahbaz is from the Persian word for “royal falcon”; shahbazim is the plural form.) Shahbazim add a very personalized and comforting aspect to the Center. They don’t wear white uniforms. They are assigned full-time to a specific Green House home, instead of being shared by the entire facility. There are no nurse’s stations or medical carts. The end result: at Leonard Florence Center for Living our competent and compassionate caregivers provide individualized skilled nursing home care, 24 hours a day, all within the comforts of home.

With shahbazim preparing food much of the day, the common spaces are filled with delicious aroma of home cooking. Coffee, tea and snacks are provided at each resident’s preferred times throughout the day. Residents rise when they want, eat when they want and plan their own schedules. In this sense, the Center very much simulates the living options available in one’s own home.

A Real Home

The prevailing goal of the Leonard Florence Center was to create a “real” home that provides exceptional care, but also supports those seeking to redefine the worth and meaning of late life and those living with debilitating diseases. On the first floor of the Leonard Florence Center — or “Main Street” as it is often called — residents and families are able to take in the beautiful aesthetic and design of the facility. Upon entering, you will see a beautiful waterfall in the entryway and a welcoming reception and lobby area.
