The combined vision of architect/resident Steve Saling and Chelsea Jewish Lifecare’s Barry Berman resulted in the revolutionary ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) and MS (multiple sclerosis) houses located at the Leonard Florence Center for Living.

Our advanced technology enables our residents to independently navigate our spaces. The Leonard Florence Center also offers traditional long-term care and short-term rehab.

In response to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’ need for long-term ventilator care, the Leonard Florence Center for Living opened two ventilator homes. State-of-the-art portable ventilators with a unified respiratory system make it easy to switch and customize therapies, creating one easy-to-manage system. These ventilators offer greater mobility to our residents.

Care Options

Long-Term Care

Long-term care is needed when the care needs of an individual has exceeded what can be provided in the home or in any other setting such as assisted living.

Long-term care can be traditional or memory care. Because of behaviors, certain memory care units are secured to keep the individual safe. In both areas of long-term care, activities and stimulation are designed to assist the resident and meet them where they are.

Short-Term Rehab

For those times when you need additional therapy or medication management post hospital stay with the goal of returning to your home. Short-term rehab gives you the confidence to return to life as you know it, despite post-surgical fatigue or a new deficit. Physical, occupational and speech therapy can all be part of a short-term rehab plan.

ALS & MS

ALS and MS are progressive diseases that over time may warrant in-patient long-term care. A full understanding by staff of the diseases and the care changes they cause can help a person in transition be more comfortable and stabilized. Our goal is to have our residents live full lives in a stimulating environment, giving them the tools needed to negotiate the building as independently as possible.

Ventilator Care

For those who are chronically dependent on ventilators, there are options beyond living in a hospital setting. Portable ventilators that allow freedom of movement in a wheelchair not tethered to the bed, gives our ventilator care residents a new vision of their life. Experienced respiratory technicians and ventilator nurses comprise the team that keeps ventilator dependent residents in a home-like environment.
