You Are My Sunshine: Celebrating the Life of Pat Delorey

[Christine, Pat & Christine’s cousin, Anne Russell, on their last visit together in the Katzman Café. Christine said, “My mother called it ‘The Glass House’ and she loved bringing her guests there.”]

Patricia “Pat” Delorey brought warmth, humor, and joy wherever she went. She loved theater, musicals, dancing at Revere Beach, and spending time with the people she loved. Pat, who passed away on April 26, 2026, always looked on the bright side, armed with a quick wit, a sharp sense of humor, and the ability to make others smile.

Pat spent the last year and a half of her life at the Katzman Family Center for Living (KCL), where, according to her daughter, Christine Chiasson, she quickly felt at home.

“From the moment we arrived, you could see how much the staff truly cared about the residents,” Christine said. “The staff did far more than provide medical care — they formed real relationships. You could feel how much they truly loved the residents, and that made all the difference in the world.”

Christine said it was often the small acts of kindness that meant the most. Pat loved soup so much that staff affectionately called her “the soup lady,” and the chef regularly prepared her favorite soups just for her.

Pat also loved dancing and singing, and the staff embraced that part of her spirit completely. Staff members often danced their way into her room or sang along with her, keeping a smile on her face even on difficult days. Their warmth and humor transformed ordinary moments into joyful ones. Christine summed up her mom’s philosophy of life: “The hymn ‘It Is Well with My Soul’ perfectly captures the peace and hope my mother carried with her throughout her life

Christine noted that the Katzman Center reminded her more of a home and rather than a skilled nursing facility. “I was continuously impressed with the cleanliness of the Katzman Center,” says Christine. “It was immaculate! The pride that the staff took in maintaining their environment was always in evidence.”

One of the family’s favorite memories was Pat’s 95th birthday celebration, when Christine’s husband’s band performed at the Katzman Center. During the party, Pat and her 105-year-old roommate, Rose, stood hand-in-hand singing “You Are My Sunshine.”

“My mother used to say she found her best friend at age 95,” Christine recalled.

A practicing Catholic, Pat attended her first Shabbat service while at KCL, an experience she deeply appreciated. Afterward, she simply said, “We’re all trying to get into the same God.”

When Pat transitioned to hospice care, the staff focused on keeping her comfortable and surrounded by love. The family especially treasures one final visit from Pat’s 11-year-old granddaughter, when Pat was alert, smiling, and able to enjoy time with her family.

“Caring for someone with dignity, compassion, and even laughter is not easy,” Christine said. “But the Katzman Family Center for Living did exactly that. Our family will always be grateful.”

Chelsea’s Own Sandra Maddeford: A Trailblazer in Business, Art, and Life

Born and raised in Chelsea, Sandra Maddeford has built a life defined by talent, determination, and a deep love for her community. An astute saleswoman and gifted artist, Sandra enjoyed a highly successful career in real estate, founding Maddeford Real Estate in 1979—an agency that became a well-known and respected fixture in the city.

Now 90, Sandra continues to inspire those around her as a resident of Florence & Chafetz Home Assisted Living, part of Chelsea Jewish Lifecare, where she is beloved by staff and fellow residents alike.

A graduate of Chelsea High School, Sandra’s love of painting began early in life. Over the years, her artwork has been featured in numerous competitions and proudly displayed in her home. And her paintings continue to inspire—brightening not only her apartment but also the lobby of the assisted living. “Visitors always comment on how visually striking her paintings are,” says Kristen Donnelly, Executive Director of the Estates on Admiral’s Hill. Donnelly also noted what a wonderful addition Sandra has been to the Chelsea Jewish Lifecare family. “Beyond her artistic talent, Sandra is warm, funny and an absolute joy to be around.”

Sandra shared 33 years of marriage with her late husband, Charles “Chuck” Maddeford. They raised three children—Kenny, Larry, and Jenni—and Sandra is the proud grandmother of six: Christopher, Matthew, David, Caleb, Robert, and Hannah.

Her career in sales began with Avon, followed by years selling World Book Encyclopedia. It wasn’t long before Sandra found her true calling: real estate. After earning her salesperson license, she began her career at Cavaretta Real Estate in Revere. Driven by ambition and vision, Sandra received her broker’s license and opened Maddeford Real Estate.

One of Sandra’s greatest joys in business was working alongside her son Ken. They made a great team. Ken remembers his mother’s determination vividly. “One day she was showing a commercial building in Gerrish Hall, and it was all boarded up,” recalls Ken. “That didn’t deter her in the least. Sandra just climbed through a window so she could show it to perspective buyers!”

Sandra’s daughter, Jenni Crow, reflects on why Sandra was so successful in real estate. “Sandra truly loved what she did,” she remarks. “My mom is genuine, kind, and trustworthy. People are naturally drawn to her. She has a way of making everyone feel welcome—and always has a smile and a laugh to share.

Sandra’s community involvement has been as impressive as her professional career. She was a longtime member of the Chelsea Chamber of Commerce, served as President of the Everett Art Association, and was an active member of Temple Emmanuel in Chelsea, proudly embracing her Jewish heritage.

Ask her family what makes Sandra so special, and the answer is simple: her joy. “Sandra loves people and never complains,” says Jenni. “My mom’s laugh is unforgettable—she’s always loved to laugh, and it’s completely infectious.”

Sandra’s family is grateful she now calls Florence & Chafetz her home. “There are always so many activities to keep the residents engaged,” Jenni shares. “We know she’s well cared for and has much to look forward to every day. The staff truly feels like her extended family.”

Reflecting on her life, Sandra is most proud of her family and her accomplishments as a business owner. Yet through every chapter, one thing has remained constant— her love for Chelsea. “I’ve always held Chelsea in the highest regard,” she says. “It’s a place near and dear to my heart.”

Staff Spotlight: Cathie Mesina

Activities Coordinator, Florence & Chafetz Home for Specialized Care

If you’ve ever wondered where the energy, laughter, and creativity at Florence & Chafetz come from, chances are Cathie Mesina is behind it. Born and raised in Manila, Philippines, Cathie moved to Massachusetts in 2001 at age 26 to marry her high school sweetheart, Dennis, who has worked the Leonard Florence Center for the past 15 years. Together they’ve made their home in Revere for 16 years, raising two daughters—Ella, a college junior, and Isabel, a high school sophomore. Their lively household also includes Chewie, an 8-year-old Shih Tzu, three guppies, two snails, and an impressive collection of bonsai trees. “There’s never a dull moment,” Cathie says with a laugh.

Cathie’s professional journey began in hospitality—a dream fueled by her love of people, service, and creating memorable experiences. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Hotel Management and built an impressive career working with world-class brands, including the Ritz-Carlton in Singapore, Marriott in Cebu City, and 20 years at the Fairmont Copley Plaza, where she held seven different roles.

When the pandemic forced the hotel to close, Cathie found herself at a crossroads. What initially felt like a setback quickly became a career turning point. In 2021, she joined Florence & Chafetz as an Activities Coordinator—and knew she had found her calling.

“There’s no going back to hospitality for me,” she says. “My residents are my VIP guests, and caring for them is the most rewarding experience of my career.” Now in her fourth year at Chelsea Jewish Lifecare, Cathie coordinates activities at Florence & Chafetz and also assists with Low-Income Housing Certification for Admiral Hill Estates. Her favorite part of the job: the residents!

“Every day feels like spending time at Grandma’s house,” explains Cathie. “We laugh, connect and try to find creative ways to bring joy into their day. I love turning small moments into meaningful memories and honoring the beautiful lives they’ve lived.”

One experience early in her career profoundly shaped Cathie’s approach to care. While working in memory care, she connected with a resident who could be challenging and a bit disruptive during activities. As Cathie learned more about her, she discovered the resident had been well traveled, played guitar, and even co-authored art books.

“Seeing such a brilliant person lose pieces of her identity to dementia was heartbreaking,” Cathie reflects. “It taught me that every resident deserves dignity and respect, especially at this stage of life.” Since then, Cathie focuses on connecting with what remains — finding sparks from residents’ pasts and letting compassion lead the way.

Cathie’s activities are known for being fun, inclusive, and sneakily effective. “If you’re kicking or catching a ball, you don’t even realize you’re exercising,” she explains. She enjoys using everyday items and a little friendly competition to keep residents engaged, active, and smiling.

When it comes to celebrations, Cathie has favorites across cultures. Purim tops her list of Jewish holidays. “Who doesn’t love dressing up and eating lots of hamantaschen?” she exclaims. Thanksgiving is her favorite American holiday for its focus on family and gratitude while Christmas in the Philippines holds a special place in her heart.

Outside of work, Cathie is a creative homebody. She dances while cleaning, cooks and bakes with her daughters, and enjoys making art, everything from watercolor and acrylic painting to simple doodles. A fun fact many people don’t know: Cathie was part of a folk dance group as a teenager and later performed in theater, even playing Cosette in Les Misérables at the Metropolitan Theater of the Philippines.

Today Cathie is excited about the possibility of nursing school —another step in her journey of caring for others. With her deep respect for the residents and staff, Cathie Mesina brings heart to everything she does —and Florence & Chafetz is all the better for it.

Get to Know Christina Tuohey

Communications Director Chelsea Jewish Lifecare and Legacy Lifecare

Christina Tuohey has the best of both worlds. As Director of Communications for Chelsea Jewish Lifecare/Legacy Lifecare, she is able to combine her nonprofit experience with her love of photography and writing — creating a “dream” job.

“Working with seniors feels like a natural progression in my career path,” notes Christina. “Over the years, I’ve developed deep admiration for the dedication and compassion that go into caring for older adults. I find great meaning in telling the stories of our staff and residents and sharing the everyday moments of joy that happen within our communities.”

Christina earned her BA in Philosophy from Georgia State University in Atlanta, followed by a master’s degree in Nonprofit Management and Philanthropy from Bay Path University in Longmeadow. She focused on nonprofit fundraising, communications, marketing, and organizational management. Christina joined JGS Lifecare in 2017 as Director of Development, then became Director of Marketing & Community and later she was appointed Executive Director of Ruth’s House Assisted Living. In 2024 Christina was promoted to Communications Director for Legacy Lifecare — a role she thoroughly enjoys.

Raised in the South, Christina met her husband Sean in Boston soon after college. The couple have been married since 2012 and reside in Longmeadow, Massachusetts with their three children —Ellie (12), Brandon (11), and Theo (9) and their beloved dog Ash. Life in the Tuohey household is indeed busy, but Christina wouldn’t have it any other way.

Working with residents gives Christina the opportunity to witness the friendships that form—both among residents and between residents and staff. “Hearing about their life experiences is incredibly inspiring,” says Christina. “Every person carries a unique story and perspective, and I’m grateful for the chance to learn from them.” She also loves being able to highlight and celebrate the staff. “Whether it’s sharing their stories on social media or announcing an award they’ve earned, I’m proud to shine a light on their work. We couldn’t provide the level of care we do without their dedication.”

Christina’s grandmother has been one of the greatest influences in her life. She was fortunate to help care for her at Ruth’s House before she passed at age 95. “My grandmother was incredibly strong yet endlessly kind, treating everyone with warmth and respect. Her approach to life—seeing everyone as a friend—still inspires me today.”

Christina credits the More Marketing team as one reason she relishes her job so much. “I’m fortunate to work alongside a group of exceptionally smart, kind, and hardworking women,” explains Christina. “It’s an honor to be part of such a dedicated and inspiring team.”

Some of Christina’s most cherished moments are when her children come to visit the Longmeadow campus. “The residents light up the moment they walk in!” exclaims Christina. “My sons loves playing chess with one of our residents, Steve, and my daughter enjoys singing for everyone. When she performs songs from the ’40s and ’50s, residents often share memories those songs bring back. These intergenerational connections are incredibly special.”

An avid reader, Christina now reads about a book a week—though she readily admits she didn’t really enjoy reading until she was in her 30s. She hopes her children will discover the same joy. Her advice to them is simple: read what you love! “Whether it’s a video game, magazine or a book about Broadway, keep exploring until you find what excites you.”

When asked about her hobbies, Christina responds with a laugh. “At this stage of life, I jokingly say that my hobby is driving my children everywhere.” She said with a smile. “But I genuinely love supporting them in all their activities. It’s what parenting is all about.”

Your Generosity Helps Our Residents Thrive

At Chelsea Jewish Lifecare, we have always put people first. Our highest priority is providing exceptional and compassionate care for our residents. While government reimbursement helps cover essential clinical care, it does not fully reflect the actual cost of creating a community where residents truly thrive.

Charitable gifts help fill that gap—allowing us to reinvest every dollar back into our community. Your generosity supports engaging activities, specialized programs, and enriching outings that bring joy, purpose, and connection to each day. As a nonprofit organization, these gifts also strengthen staffing and services that promote comfort, dignity, and meaningful living. Through charitable giving, our residents are able to enjoy fuller, more vibrant lives —today and for years to come.

Thank you for believing in our mission and for helping ensure our residents receive care that goes well beyond what is merely required. You show us what is truly possible.
