WINTHROP-In 2012, the reality of changing Jewish demographics hit home at Temple Tifereth Israel in Winthrop. Founded in 1912, the synagogue -once part of a vibrant Jewish community that included a Jewish Community Center and a corridor of Jewish businesses by the beach – was ready to close its doors. Membership, which topped 400 families in the 1970’s was down to double digits. It no longer employed a rabbi, and there was no money to fix an aging building.
