A talented landscape architect, Steve Saling was diagnosed with ALS in 2006 at the age of 38. At the time, he was given a life expectancy of 2 to 5 years. Today, Steve has changed the way people live with ALS. He has inspired, encouraged and, most importantly, he has shown by example how a devastating ALS diagnosis can translate into a productive and meaningful life.
It was Steve’s dream was to create a place where people with ALS could receive care yet live a “normal” life. Together with Chelsea Jewish Lifecare CEO Barry Berman, they created the Steve Saling ALS Residence for Long-term Care, the first ALS residence in the award-winning Leonard Florence Center for Living. The residence was the first urban model Green House® skilled nursing facility in the country. Located on the second floor, the Saling ALS residence is equipped with the latest computer-operated technology to allow individuals with ALS the most amount of independence possible.
Ten private rooms, each with its own bath and shower, make up the home. Ceiling lifts in every room allow residents to transition from bed to bathroom with ease. A picturesque living space, beautifully landscaped yard with a babbling waterfall and koi pond, and in-home kitchen and dining, complete the residence. Residents and their guests have access to a cozy fireplace living room, open kitchen and dining area and outdoor patio.
Residents are able to open doors, control lights, turn up or down their bedroom shades, adjust room temperatures, control home theater, call for assistance, or call for the elevator – all with help of a computer and a sensor that tracks head and eye movements for instruction. Due to the unique architecture, small footprint of each Green House, and innovative technology, wheelchair-bound individuals have independent mobility with meaningful choices and dignity.
Residents can participate in a wide range of activities, including concerts, games, weekly restaurant outings, pub nights, intergenerational programs, lectures, holiday and birthday celebrations, among many others.
You’ll have access to the European day spa, deli, library/family room, chapel and outside patio. Enjoy three nutritious and fresh kosher meals a day, with 24-hour room service upon request.
